As they prepare to take on 2006 FIFA World Cup™ surprise package Ecuador in their final Group A game in Berlin, Germany know that only a win will take them ahead of the South Americans and avoid a probable second-round clash with arch-rivals England. "Both teams are already through to the next round. Naturally, we’re aiming to win the match and go into the Round of 16 as group winners,” assistant coach Joachim Low told a scheduled press conference on Sunday. “We’ve taken a good, hard look at our opponents and thoroughly analysed their matches to date, including their qualifiers and warm-up friendlies.” The upshot of the exercise has been a healthy respect for Luis Suarez’s men. “They’ve made a very strong impression,” Low admitted. “They and Sweden both play the most disciplined 4-4-2, absolutely textbook stuff. They cover for each other brilliantly and keep it incredibly tight. They’ve yet to concede a goal and they’ve been very dangerous in front of goal. They totally deserved to win both their matches so far.” Coach Jurgen Klinsmann has a full complement of players from which to choose after Christoph Metzelder was cleared to face the Tricolor. The Borussia Dortmund centre-half limped out of training on Saturday with a twisted knee. “He’s not a doubt for Tuesday; he’ll definitely be fit to play, although we may rest him and wait for the last 16. One or two changes are a definite possibility, although we’re still thinking about what that might entail. Jurgen Klinsmann and I are considering our options,” Low revealed. Captain Michael Ballack is a certain starter, despite the risk he might collect a second booking and miss his side’s Round of 16 tie. “Michael Ballack is carrying a yellow card, but he’ll definitely play. We’ll have a word with him and tell him to avoid unnecessary fouls. He wasn’t fit for the opening match, but he returned to face Poland. It’s important he rediscovers his rhythm ahead of the knockout stages.” Ballack himself is raring to go. “I’m a footballer and I want to play every game," he said. "You need match practice, it’s totally essential, so I don’t think the boss will make too many changes.” Ballack is already looking ahead to the Round of 16 and a likely meeting with England or Sweden. “We’re assuming those two will get through,” he said. Ballack insisted he had no qualms at the prospect of a meeting with England, the home of his new club Chelsea. “We have no reason to fear anyone at all. If you play well, you earn your opponents’ respect. We need to turn in another good display when we play Ecuador. It would be a confidence booster, and we’d be full of confidence for the next match, against England or anyone else. "We have a young and well-balanced team, we’re hungry and we’re up for it. We’re just enjoying ourselves for the time being. Let’s worry about Ecuador first. We can finish top of the group if we win the match, and that would be fantastic for our self-belief.” Be that as it may, the evidence so far suggests that their Andean opponents should be underestimated at their peril.
