Working Mothers

For years, the conventional wisdom for working mothers has been, "You can't have your cake and eat it too." In other words, you can be there for your children, or you can advance in your career, but not both. Fortunately, the prevailing winds are beginning to change, and women are finding that they can balance work and family. They can close the gap between the life they have and the life they want. Although, working has its positive influence, raising a family while pursuing career goals may be difficult for mothers.

 

One advantage for working mothers is that they get a break from home life and interact socially with others. Another advantage is that they help their husbands in feeding, sheltering and educating their children. Furthermore, working mothers feel that their self-esteem is boosted through work and they could achieve their goals. Children of working mothers are usually more independent.

 

There are, on the other hand, many good reasons against working mothers. To begin with, it is hard to find enough time to fit housework when mothers are working. Mothers are obliged to leave their children with a responsible maid at home or put them in a Day-care Centre. In addition, kids will be homeless and hostile if their mothers spend most of their time at work. They will not be given enough attention and love. Moreover, mothers become physically and mentally tired of working at home and outside.

Well, in the light of the above advantages and disadvantages of working mothers, the question arises, should mothers stay at home with their children and leave their career behind? Not necessarily. Deciding whether to work or stay at home to raise a family is difficult. There are no set rules which can be suitable for all mothers in the world. Be honest with yourself. If you have any doubts about your ability to handle the challenges of being a stay-at-home mom, then don't be so quick to chuck your high heels and briefcase. Instead, consider trying the stay-at-home test. Take your two-week vacation at home this year and get a glimpse of life as a stay-at-home mom. If you like how it feels, submit your letter of resignation. If it doesn't feel right for you, then return to work knowing that for now, working outside the home full or part-time is the right decision for you.

Finally, to succeed both at home and at work, mothers need the right amount of support from all their family members.
